WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL

Science Lesson at Edgbarrow School

On a Monday in June, Year 5 walked to Edgbarrow Secondary School for a science lesson. We did a lesson on gases. Our teachers were Mr Fitch and Mr Lucas.

In the lesson, Mr Lucas had 2 balloons filled with hydrogen and he had a wooden splint that was alight at the end of a ruler and he blew them up. They were very loud.

We also did two more experiments. In the first one we had 2 test tubes. Mr Fitch came round and put a small metal strip into the lime water in the tube. We lit a wooden splint and held it above the tube, then the flame on the splint burst and made a popping noise. In the next tube there was a blue sloppy liquid and Mr Fitch put some carbon powder in the tube, then with the wooden splint we put it in at the top and the flame went out. We put the flame in it and quickly put in the other and the flame relit. We went outside and Mr Lucas made a water rocket.

In the second experiment we had an ice cream tub, a feeder tube, a cold bottle of lemonade and a room temperature bottle of lemonade and a stopwatch. Our task was to find out which bottle temperature produces the most carbon dioxide. First of all we filled the ice cream tub with water and put the measuring cylinder in upside down with our hand over the top. then we took the lid off the lemonade and connected the feeder tube to the top of the room temperature lemonade and put the other end of the feeder tube under in the measuring cylinder. Then we waited for the cylinder to empty the water and fill with carbon dixide. We timed this with the stopwatch. We wrote the time down and did all the same again but with the cold bottle. Most of us found out that the room temperature bottle produced the most carbon dioxide. We all had a great time learning at Edgbarrow.
